The different Cannabis seeds

I differenti semi di Cannabis

One of the most frequently asked questions for those who enter the world of cannabis cultivation concerns the seeds to choose. In fact, there are many on the market variety with different characteristics among which it may seem complicated to make a careful choice. The cannabis plant is so loved all over the world that it makes growers constantly experiment with new genetics, which can then be spread through the seed trade: there are more “rustic” ones, some more difficult to grow, some more suitable for outdoors or indoors and so on.

To begin with, there are three macro groups into which cannabis genetics are divided: Indica, Sativa and Hybrid. Learning to distinguish these typologies is very important because they respond to different uses. Cannabis Indica, in fact, has a value that we could define sedative: when consumed it relaxes, soothes pain and promotes sleep. It is perfect as a therapeutic plant and its small size (under 1.20 meters) makes it perfect to grow at home.

Cannabis sativa, unlike Indica, has psychoactive powers and energizing: it is the classic recreational choice, but it is also loved by artists looking for inspiration. Its dimensions are larger than those of cannabis indica: in this case we are talking about heights that can reach three meters.

The real turning point for those who want to combine the genetics of the two varieties in a single product lies in the hybrids: in fact, there are seeds that originate from a variable marriage between indica and sativa: obviously those with an indica prevalence (in a ratio of approximately 70/30) will generate plants with a more relaxing effect, while those with a sativa prevalence will be more useful for having fun in company.

In addition to these aspects, when choosing the most suitable seed it is useful consider the desired amount of CBD and THC. “Medicinal” plants are generally high in CBD and almost devoid of THC: this is the so-called legal cannabis.

Another useful distinction for choosing seeds concerns the cultivation of cannabis real, with its growth and flowering phases. The big difference  it is between Photoperiodic and autoflowering seeds. Photoperiodic plants are those that have a more “natural” behavior: they need a lot of light to grow and begin to flower when the brightness begins to decrease. Autoflowering plants, on the other hand, flower after a certain time regardless of how much light they receive: for this characteristic they are suitable for less experienced growers.

One last important distinction concerns the “sex” of cannabis: in fact, the plants that produce flowers are exclusively female. Here too, the criterion of experience applies: the less experienced, to avoid confusion, can buy the so-called seeds feminized, that is, only female, while more advanced growers prefer the semi regular, where once grown the males must be separated from the females but in return the quality of the aroma is better. The advantage of regular seeds lies in the fact that it is possible to obtain flowers avoiding the pollination of the plants, but also produce new seeds if you decide to reproduce them.

As we have seen, the world of cannabis seeds is complex and full of variety: the best idea, if you are growing for the first time, is talk to your trusted dealer and ask for advice based on the type of use desired, but also with respect to the type of equipment you own (very important for successful indoor cultivation).
