What is CBG and how does it differ from CBD

May 15, 2023
Cos’è Il CBG e come si differenzia dal CBD
As you may already know, CBD is a non-psychotropic substance with therapeutic properties that is naturally contained in cannabis. Cannabis has different types of cannabinoids, chemical substances responsible for different effects on humans: the most famous of these substances is naturally THC, with psychotropic power, followed in popularity by the aforementioned CBD. But these two cannabinoids are not the only ones! Today, in particular, we will talk about the little-known CBG, which in many ways resembles CBD but retains some differences.
CBG is an “ancient” substance in cannabis as it descends from the mother of all cannabinoids, CBGA, which chemically differentiates during the growth of the plant and transforms into THC, CBD, etc. CBGA exposed to heat (including that of the sun) transforms into CBG.
It is estimated that most marijuana strains grown contain less than 1% CBG at harvest. This is a shame, as recent studies have confirmed the importance of CBG and listed its many beneficial effects. In fact, growers are already studying the possibility of crossbreeding to increase the amount of CBG in their plants.
Like CBD, CBG does not get you high, but it does seem useful for managing different forms and levels of physical pain. Again, similarly to its more famous “cousin” CBD, our cannabinoid seems to have anti-inflammatory effects, so much so that it is being tested in particular for inflammatory bowel diseases. Recent studies conducted at the University of Naples on mice go in this direction, with strongly positive results.
It also seems that CBG could prove to be a valid aid in the fight against serious pathologies related to old age, such as glaucoma and neurodegenerative diseases. As for glaucoma, CBG has proven to be effective in reducing intraocular pressure (at least this was the case in experiments conducted, starting in the 90s, on cats). As for neurodegenerative diseases, science is focusing on Huntington's disease, for some aspects of which treatment with CBG seems adequate.
At this point, someone might ask: is CBD or CBG better, given that some effects are similar? In reality, the results of a treatment with CBD or CBG are similar only in some aspects, such as the reduction of spasms and inflammation, but the two cannabinoids are very different from each other.
The point is that making a treatment with CBG today is very difficult because it is a component present in minimal part in the legal cannabis that is sold and, above all, because medical studies on the substance are still ongoing. Better to opt for CBD at the moment, cheaper and easier to find and with excellent results for health, even if probably in the future the choice between one or the other cannabinoid could be simpler.
In any case, CBG is already perfectly legal in Italy; in fact, it is not even listed in the list of psychotropic substances established by the United Nations.
