Why Marijuana Causes Red Eyes? It can be avoided?

Jun 05, 2023
Perché la marijuana fa venire gli occhi rossi? Si può evitare?
Red eyes are a sure sign that someone has just smoked cannabis. But have you ever wondered what causes this phenomenon and, in case of possible sources of embarrassment, how to fix it? We talk about it in this article!
As for the causes of eye redness associated with smoking, there is not a single cause but rather several factors that come into play simultaneously. These are eye irritation from exposure to smoke, dehydration, and changes in blood pressure associated with cannabis use.
After smoking, blood pressure first rises quickly and then drops quite sharply. As blood pressure drops, the blood vessels in the body tend to dilate, and the same is true for those in the eyes: the increased blood flow in the dilated vessels reddens the cornea. If we add to this the fact that smoking, especially in poorly ventilated rooms, is slightly irritating, and that dehydration also promotes this irritation, we can well understand how common the phenomenon is.
Good news for CBD-only users: CBD acts on the body very differently than THC, and legal weed smokers rarely experience the red eye phenomenon! Yet another reason to choose this healthy alternative to traditional weed.
What about those who consume THC cannabis using “alternative” methods? Do they also get red eyes? The answer is yes. Those who vaporize cannabis can reduce the phenomenon of eye irritation, because the vapor is not as irritating as combustion smoke, but will still experience the pressure changes that cause redness. Edibles can also make the eyes red, especially if the dosage is too strong. Finally, THC patches can also produce this phenomenon. In short, there is no escape.
But is there a way to quickly restore your eyes to their natural color after consuming cannabis with THC? The main remedy is to stay well hydrated. Drinking a lot will help your body to regulate itself, reduce dehydration and therefore eye irritation. Even eye drops, especially those specifically designed for smokers, can be a valid help. As for remedies, we must limit ourselves to these: those who often suffer from red eyes after consuming marijuana know that they have to wait a while before an important meeting and at most have to use classic sunglasses in situations that allow it.
But is it possible to prevent the phenomenon of red eyes, rather than just treating it? The most obvious solution is to consume THC-free weed, which as we know has many benefits beyond that! Another strategy, much more home-made (and less guaranteed) consists of wearing glasses while smoking to reduce at least one of the sources of redness, namely irritation.
In conclusion, it is good to remember that the phenomenon of “blood” eyes can be embarrassing, but it is not harmful to the body at all. In a little while, the eyes will return to their natural color, and in the meantime all the benefits of cannabis will have come into action, making even this problem forget.
